Catfish Moon (Our annual Spotlight on
Mississippi Playwrights) by Laddy Sartin is the story of three
former childhood chums, Curley, Gordon and Frog whose friendships
have been strained by the pressures of middle age. It doesn’t help
that Gordon is dating Frog’s ex-wife. In an attempt to strengthen
their relationships with one another, all three agree to go on an
overnight fishing trip just like they did in the old
days.
Laddy
Sartin, was
born in Brookhaven, Mississippi in 1951. He grew up in the country
on the back roads of Lincoln County and spent much of his childhood
at his granny Reed’s house, his favorite place on earth. Currently a
resident of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Laddy holds a BFA in Theatre
from the University of Southern Mississippi. An actor and stage
technician as well as a writer, Sartin has worked in theatre for the
past two decades. He was the 1991-92 recipient of the North Carolina
Arts Council’s Playwriting Fellowship, the state’s most prestigious
individual artist award, with an honorarium of $8,000. His play Blessed Assurance was
selected for the Eudora Welty New Play Series at New Stage Theatre
in Jackson, Mississippi, and was performed there in March 1995.
Catfish Moon was originally
presented by The Charlotte Repertory Theatre in 1994 during their
Charlotte Festival/New Plays in America Series where it received the
prestigious Virginia Duvall Mann
Award.
